United States women’s soccer team continues to dominate the sports headlines as they defeated France 3-1 in a dominating fashion as they advance to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final. The USA had a comfortable start in their group with a 2-0 win over North Korea thanks to second half goals from Lauren Cheney and Buehler. And their route to the quarter finals was secured when they beat Columbia 3-0 in the second match, with O’Reilly, Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd finding the net. The North Americans though always looked second best in their final match against Sweden, losing 2-1.
For Japan, Team Japan will have a slight familiarity advantage as the game will be played at the Commerzbank Arena, better known as the Waldstadion, home of Eintracht Frankfurt, which is where Japan won their semi-final game against Sweden. Japan struggled a little in their opening group game against New Zealand despite taking the lead on six minutes through Yuki Nagasato. New Zealand were level six minutes later and it took a 68th minute strike from Miyama to seal the win. The Japanese had it easier in the second match with a 4-0 win over Mexico helped by a hat-trick from Sawa and a goal by Shinobu Ohno. They lost their last group match 2-0 to England.
The world wants to see how the Japanese team through the leadership of Kawasumi will play the United States with Wambach on the offensive. It is Japan’s World Cup Final while the United States had been here before and even wind up winning.
